The practice of aromatherapy has been used for hundreds of years to reduce stress, affect mood variations and calm. Aromatherapy is the act of using the sense of smell to energize your body, reduce daily stress and improve your mood through different scents and scented oils. Aromatherapy is also used in the treatment or prevention of a disease or symptoms of a disease. Scented oils and essential oils are the primary ingredients in the use of aromatherapy, and it is crucial to understand each  oil’s unique effect on your mood.

Though scented oils are frequently used in body lotions, beauty products and scented candles, essential scented oils are regarded as specific holistic treatment involving aromatherapy. These essential scented oils are all-natural and very potent, and each individual aromatherapy scent can be used for remedy a specific problem.

For example, one of the most popular scented oils used in aromatherapy is Lavender. Lavender is used to reduce stress in the body, maintain calm and induce a relaxing state that even helps you fall into slumber more easily. On the opposite end of the aromatherapy spectrum, Peppermint is an energizing essential oil which promotes mental stamina, concentration and focus. There are numerous other essential oils which you can use for aromatherapy, such as Sweet Orange for anxiety, disappointment and stress. Cedarwood is used to help fight respiratory symptoms such as bronchitis and cough, and also for acne and dermatitis. It makes an excellent natural insect repellant. Many essential oils have an added pharmacologic benefit, such as anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral, antispasmodic, antifungal and antiseptic. Be sure to research thoroughly before using any essential oil. This is especially true for women who are pregnant-some essential oils are considered emmenagogues (herbs which increase the flow of blood to the pelvic area). Safe use of these oils in pregnancy has not been demonstrated.

There are several simple ways to use the art of Aromatherapy with essential oils to cure daily ailments. For example, the simplest way is by massaging diluted essential oils into your skin in order to spread the fragrance and reach your desired aromatherapy healing objective. Essential oils are very concentrated and strong; they must be mixed in a carrier oil or lotion before being put on the skin. Only a few drops (4-6) are to be used per cup of lotion or other oil.  Another way to use aromatherapy is by diffusing these oils with an Aromatherapy Atomizer which is an electrical component that diffuses the essential oil smell throughout a select room. It works similar to a scented candle, but the essential oils are stronger which makes the Aromatherapy more efficient. It is not recommended that any essential oil be taken internally unless done under the direct supervision of trained licensed aromatherapy professionals.  A common essential oil, eucalyptus, is extremely toxic when ingested.  In addition, some essentials are hazardous to house pets, especially cats.

Aromatherapy is an all-natural holistic approach which uses scented oils to energize the mind, improve mood and promote relaxation. Discover what it can do for you by experimenting with different essential oils, and researching the art of Aromatherapy.

There’s a real difference in dabbling in aromatherapy and really using essential oils as medicine. Many folks will make use of lavender for rest or tea tree to prevent infections of cuts and scrapes, yet remain unaware of the greater potential essential oils have to offer. One of the barriers is really not knowing what to do with those great smelling little bottles of oil. In Europe, their use has evolved into three distinct methods of use — hopefully by understanding these, you can embark on your own journey of using essential oils as medicine.

It’s crucial to see beyond what is commonly understood as aromatherapy in the U.S. The word often conjures images of aromatic spa treatments, with clients bathed in rose petals. But the true definition of the word means something much more: the entire branch of botanical medicine utilizing the volatile aromatic constituents of plants. Really, aromatherapy is a major aspect of herbal medicine, with an incredible healing potential.

As aromatherapy practice evolved in Europe, the major methods of essential oil use became associated with its proponents in particular countries. The German method embraces inhalation, the English uses topical application via massage, and the French, where modern aroma-medicine originated, primarily involves involves ingestion.

The method favored in Germany is inhalation, perhaps the most commonly imagined route of administration of essential oils. The applications are actually much more diverse than one would expect purely from inhalation, however. At one end of the spectrum, we have inhalation for affecting mental conditions: reducing anxiety and improving rest. Oils for this are generally soft and floral — lavender is the primary culprit, and chamomile being so popular in Germany that there’s even a variety called “German Chamomile”. Inhalation is also a wonderful way to receive healthy, natural stimulation that’s been proven to sharpen our focus.

The German school of practice, while utilizing inhalation as the application method of the oils, also focuses significantly on the medicinal aspect of oil use. Treatment of infectious illness is readily accomplished via inhalation of essential oil vapors, especially if high-tech nebulizing diffusers are used (these create a visible mist of oil, which disperses quickly in indoor environments). By inhaling high concentrations of diffused essential oil, the cells lining our respiratory system are treated with their antimicrobial action. Oils have been shown in scientific research to have antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, and even immune-system stimulating effects, all of which are utilized through inhalation.

The English method of aromatherapy involves topical application, and centers around aromatherapy massage. In a way, aromatherapy massage really includes the inhalation of the oils as once cannot help smell the oils when they’re being rubbed all over your body. These massages can help with stress with some oils and techniques, or be stimulating using others. Topical application in this way can also help with cold-care, as massaging the chest, sinuses and lymph glands of the body can strongly support immune system function. Some individuals are using blends of frankincense and lemongrass in a carrier oil as a complementary cancer treatment, as these oils have been shown to have anti-cancer activity in laboratory research.

The English method doesn’t technically involve therapeutic use of oils for skin care, though this is a rapidly growing area of essential oil use. Many oils have exceptional properties for treatment of all sorts of skin conditions. Infections of all kinds are treated with blends including tea tree. Acne can be effectively treated with tea tree or myrtle oils. Anti-aging and mature skin blends can be made with frankincense, rose otto, sea buckthorn and many more, using carrier oils rich in essential fatty acids. Essential oils have potent antioxidant activity, and can be excellent for use when one has spent a lot of time in the sun — sandalwood oil has even been show to prevent skin cancer when applied before exposure to UV radiation.

Moving on the French method, by far the most controversial. While on one side of the argument we have some saying “never ingest any essential oil”, an on the other the FDA lists most essential oils as “generally recognized as safe” for ingestion. Not that the FDA is a sound source of medical advice, but typically they’re the ones stating how dangerous natural medicines can be. The truth is that the essential oils that actually have therapeutic protocols created for the treatment of illness are safe to ingest in the recommended amounts.

The protocols used by French doctors involve very small amounts of essential oils. These are in the range of one to three drops at a time, up to three times daily. This is different than tossing back a bottle like a cocktail, which must be what some are imaging when advocating oils never be ingested. The way the doctor/patient/essential oil use worked until only recently (as the movement by big business and government has made using natural therapies more difficult, and in many cases illegal) one would see a doctor specially trained in the use of oils. They would give you a prescription with a specific blend for your condition, and a dosage regime that was used only as long as necessary. While this sort of treatment isn’t available in the States, it’s important to note that oils can and should be used this way if this is the best method to treat an illness.

Now you’re a good bit more knowledgeable on the major schools of the therapeutic use of essential oils. This is important know-how for the beginning aromatherapist, as it opens one’s mind to the great range of possibilities of treatment with the very potent medicines involved in aromatherapy.

Aromatherapy is a herbal medicine which uses the healing effects of essential oils, absolutes, floral waters, resins, carrier oils, infused oils, herbs and other natural substances as treatment for physical and mental conditions. Aromatherapy is based on the concept that different scents have different effects on the mind and body.

Essential oil, is a liquid volatile aromatic compound, extracted from plants. Essential oils are used in aromatherapy, cosmetics, perfumery, incense, for flavoring food and drink, and cleaning products. Essential oils are referred to as “oil of” the plant from which it was extracted. Examples are oil of antimony, oil of clove, oil of eucalyptus. The term essential means that the oil is the fragrant essence of the plant from which it is extracted.

Medical use of essential oil in aromatherapy The medical use of plant oils has a long history. Aromatherapy is currently one of the most popular ays of de-stressing. The origins go back thousands of years. Essential oils are concentrated, they generally should not be applied directly to the skin undiluted. Some can cause irritations or allergic reactions. Essential oils should be diluted before being applied. Olive, hazelnut, grapeseed are often used as carrier oils. Organically produced essential oils are best particularly if you are going to use it on your skin.

Aromatherapy is often used with massage therapy, acupuncture, reflexology, herbology, chiropractic and other alternative therapies. In an Aromatherapy massage, essential oils may be blended to suit the individual needs of the client. Aromatherapy massage is for anyone who appreciates a massage, the importance of skin care, and stress relief.

Essential oils are extracted from flowers, seeds, roots, leaves, wood, bark, or peel.

Most of the common essential oils are distilled using water. Raw plants are put into an alembic over heated water. As the water is heated the steam passes through the plant material, extracting the volatile compounds. The vapors are condensed back to liquid and collected. The liquid recondensed from the distillation process is called herbal distillate, plant water essence or hydrosols and is sold as a fragrant product. Examples of distilled oils are lemon balm, rose water, lavender water, clary sage or orange blossom water.

Citrus peel oils are usually cold-pressed, due to the large quantities of oil in the peels.

Volatile oils from flowers are delicate, carbon dioxide is used to extract the waxes and the essential oils that make up the concrete. Concretes are a mixture of essential oil, waxes, resins, and other plant material. The concrete is then processed with liquid carbon dioxide to separate the waxes and resins from the essential oils. When the pressure is reduced, the carbon dioxide reverts back to a gas, leaving no residue. This is a lower temperature process that prevents the decomposition of the essential oils.

Oil from the same plant can have a different name when a extracted in a different way. Rose oil is extracted from the petals of Rosa damascena and Rosa centifolia.

Steam-distilled rose oil is known as “rose otto” while the solvent extracted rose oil is known as “rose absolute”.

Essential oils must be treated like medicines. It is advisable that you exercises caution and consult a qualified aromatherapy practitioner before using aromatherapy for medical use. The internal use of essential oils should be fully avoided during

pregnancy without consulting with a licensed professional, as some oils can be abortifacients. Read safety precautions before you use them. Some very common oils such as Eucalyptus are extremely toxic internally. The smoke from burning essential oils may contain potential carcinogens, never smoke essential oils of any kind. Essential oils should always be kept out of the reach of children. Some oils can be toxic to some animals, particularly cats.

When it comes to feeling better, rejuvenating your spirit, stimulating your mind, and boosting your physical prowess, aromatherapy is the ultimate.

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/Aromatherapy – Top Tips For Buying Essential Oils

Essential oils are highly concentrate liquids that are extracted from various plants. They contain aromatic compounds and are used therapeutically for aromatherapy applications such as inhalation, massage and bath. They can be taken from different parts of the plants including leaves, stem, seeds, flowers, bark, roots and fruit. They also require special handling and storage.

These tips will provide you with information on buying and storing your essential oils.

          Buying Your Essential Oils

          * Always buy from a reputable source. Some unscrupulous vendors will cut or dilute essential oils compromising their integrity and effectiveness. You should only use pure, natural essential oils for health and wellness purposes.

          * Do not purchase essential oils that are stored in clear or plastic containers, or bottles with rubber stops or seals. Essential oils degrade materials like plastic and rubber and light will damage them.

          * Do not confuse fragrance oils, perfume oils and synthetic oils with essential oils. There is not substitute, especially when you are using them for health and wellness purposes. Additionally, some synthetic oils can cause adverse reactions in some people.

          * Watch for synthetic essential oils. Oils such as strawberry, cucumber, rain, carnation and lilac are always synthetic. If they are in the vendor’s stock it may be an indication that the rest of the inventory is synthetic as well.

          * Make sure that your essential oils pass the purity test. Place a drop of essential oil on a piece of paper. Ideally, it will evaporate quickly, leaving no oily mark behind. If there is an oily mark left, it is an indication that the oil has been cut with vegetable oil.

          * Give your essential oils the sniff test. Take a good whiff. Pure essential oils will give out a full, round scent that is rather strong. A little bit will go a long way. Diluted versions are not as strong.

          Storing Your Essential Oils

          * Store essential oils in a cool, dark, dry place, away from heat, light and moisture. They should be sold in dark glass containers and should be stored in them as well. Light, heat and moisture will degrade the oils altering their effectiveness. Bottles should be closed tightly when they are not in use and do not touch the inside of the lid or the reducer top when you use the oils. Your own oils from your skin can affect the essential oils and cause them to lose their effectiveness.

          * Oils that are old should not be used for health and wellness purposes. Pay attention to the shelf life of essential oils. Some oils will break down and change over time which can be a few months for some oils and years for others. Some old oils, however, can still be used for fragrance purposes like in potpourri.

          * Some oils such as Citrus varieties are prone to oxidisation, so you should store them in a cool place, preferably refrigerated if you have the space. However, you must make sure the refrigerator settings are not set too low, temperatures around five or ten degrees celsius are fine.

          * If you store your carrier oils in this way during the summer it is worthwhile taking them out of the fridge twelve hours before you need to use them, so it gives them a reasonable amount of time to adjust to room temperature. You may find some carrier oils have small fatty particles forming, but a simple shake of the bottle will help them dissolve again as the oils warms up.

          * Having space in your fridge for your essential oils may be a luxury for many of us, so a good alternative is to invest in a storage box. It does not need to be anything fancy, just a dedicated box that helps keep all of your oils together and away from ambient temperature changes.

Essential Oils: How Do Essential Oils Work?

Essential oils enter the body in two main ways. Most commonly they enter via the nose and our sense of smell identifies the smells and sends messages to the brain via the olfactory glands. This is where the therapeutic process begins. The effects such as relaxation or refreshment, of stimulating memories or giving a sense of relief or well being, can differ from one person to another.

          Aromatherapy: What Should You Believe?

Aromatherapy is both an art and a science, widely used by many, but never since the advent of modern medicines in the 20th century has it, or other holistic therapies, been accepted by many in the medical profession. The reason given being the lack of proof that it works. The lack of funds available to carry out clinical trials on the scale required will of course ensure proof will not be forthcoming. But does such scepticism really matter?

Essential oils were were mankind’s first medicine. From Egyptian hieroglyphics and Chinese manuscripts, we know that priests and physicians have been using essential oils for thousands of years.

Today modern science is rediscovering the wisdom of the ancients. Essential oils are able to reach deep into the recesses of our brains, cross over the chemical barriers, and open the hidden channels within our minds and bodies.Essential oils fragrances pass on to the limbic system of the brain without being registered by the cerebral cortex.

Within the limbic system resides the regulatory mechanism of the innermost core of our being. Here is the seat of our sexuality, the impulse of attraction and aversion, our motivation and our moods, our memory and creativity, as well as our autonomic nervous system.

Because the limbic system is directly connected to those parts of the brain that control heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, memory, stress levels, and hormone balance, essential oils can have some very profound physiological and psychological effects.

Also present in the limbic system of the brain is a gland called the amygdala. In 1989 it was discovered that the amygdala plays a major role in the storing and releasing of emotional trauma. The only way to stimulate this gland is with fragrance or the sense of smell. So now, with Aromatherapy and essential oils, we are able access the amygdala to release emotional trauma.

What Benefits do PURE Essential Oils Provide?

Essential Oils are regenerating and oxygenating. They are the immune defense properties of plants and are so small in molecular size that they can quickly penetrate the tissues of the skin.

Essential oils are lipid soluble and are capable of penetrating cell walls, even if they have hardened because of an oxygen deficiency. In fact, essential oils can affect every cell of the body within 20 minutes and are then metabolized like other nutrients.

Essential oils contain oxygen molecules which help to transport nutrients to the starving human cells. Because a nutritional deficiency is an oxygen deficiency, disease begins when the cells lack oxygen for proper nutrient assimilation. By providing the needed oxygen, essential oils also work to stimulate the immune system.

Essential oils are very powerful antioxidants. Antioxidants create an unfriendly environment for free radicals. They prevent all mutations, work as free radical scavengers, prevent fungus, and prevent oxidation in the cells.

Essential oils are antibacterial, anti-cancerous, anti-fungal, anti-infectious, anti-microbial, anti- tumorial, anti-parasitic, anti-viral, and antiseptic. Essential oils have been shown to destroy all tested bacteria and viruses while simultaneously restoring balance to the body.

Essential oils may detoxify the cells and blood in the body.

Essential oils containing sesquiterpenes have the ability to pass the blood brain barrier, enabling them to be effective in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease, Lou Gehrig’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and multiple sclerosis.

Essential oils are aromatic. When diffused, they provide air purification by: removing metallic particles and toxins from the air, increasing atmospheric oxygen, increasing ozone and negative ions in the area, which inhibits bacterial growth; destroying odors from mold, cigarettes, and animals.

Essential oils help promote emotional, physical and spiritual healing.

Essential oils have a bio-electrical frequency that is several times greater than the frequency of herbs, food, and even the human body. Clinical research has shown than essential oils can quickly raise the frequency of the human body, restoring it to its normal healthy level.

What Enables PURE Essential Oils to Provide Such Incredible Benefits?

Essential oils are chemically very heterogenetic; meaning they are very diverse in their effects and can perform several different functions. Synthetic chemicals are completely opposite in that they basically only have one action.

This gives essential oils a paradoxical nature which can be difficult to understand. However, they can be compared to another paradoxical group – human beings.

For example, a man can play many roles such as father, husband, friend, co-worker, accountant, school teacher, scout master, etc…and so it is with essential oils. Lavender for example can be used for burns, insect bites, headaches, PMS, insomnia, stress, and so forth.

In beginning your journey into the realm of aromatherapy and essential oils it is very important to use only the purest oils available. Anything less than pure, may not produce the desired results and can, in some cases, be extremely toxic.

PLEASE NOTE: The information in this article is based solely on the use of 100% Pure Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils due to their high quality and tested purity.

The use of a brand of uncertain quality and/or purity will provide you with potentially dangerous, if not lethal, results.

The statements about these oils have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. These oils are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

The odoriferous substances (Essential oils) themselves are formed in the chloroplasts of the leaves where they combine with glucose to form glucides and are then circulated around the plant in this form. At certain times of the day or year they are stored in particular parts of the plant.

In some plants, the essential oils are produced by the secretory tissues, and in others they are combined with glycosides, and are therefore not detectable until the plant is dried or crushed, e.g.: Valerian

Essential oils are considered to be an important part of the plant’s metabolism: some have hormonal activity and others are a stage in some other process, e.g.: the oil found in the rind of the orange is a stage in Vitamin A synthesis.

Essential oils can be found in almost any part of the plant, in differing concentrations, depending on the plant itself, the time of day and year. They may be found in the roots (e.g.: Calamus and Valerian), flowers (e.g. Lavender, Rose,), bark (e.g. Sandalwood, Cedarwood), fruits (e.g.: Lemon, Cardamom, Orange), berries (e.g. Juniper), leaves (e.g. Thyme, Rosemary, Sage).

Plants which contain essences must be picked at the correct time of day and in the correct season, and in particular weather conditions in order that a maximum yield of the essential oils can be obtained, and of course, as with all medicinal or nutritional plants, soil conditions, and climatic conditions will also dictate the quality of the oils obtained.

Heavy, concentrated oils are called ABSOLUTES e.g.: Rose, Jasmine, Oils which are solid at room temperature and which must be warmed before use are called BALSAMS, e.g.: Benzoin and Camphor.

          HOW DO ESSENTIAL OILS WORK?

Essential oils are known to have an effect on us in three different, but overlapping, ways.

          a) On the physical body, both locally and systemically, via the lymphatic and blood circulation.

          b) On the mind and emotions via the Sense of Smell and the Limbic System.

          c) On the “Etheric Energy System” of the body via the energy vibration of the individual oils themselves.

The Way Essential Oils Effect the Physical Body

When Essential oils are applied to the surface of the body, either via Massage, Baths, Compresses, Creams or Lotions, they will have an effect locally (i.e. the site at which they are applied), and Systemically (i.e. throughout the body). The Systemic effect occurs when essential oils are absorbed through the skin into the Lymphatic Circulation, and they are then dumped from the Lymphatic circulation into the blood stream.

Once the oils are circulating in the blood, they are carried to their TARGET ORGAN/S, where they exert a therapeutic effect on the specific tissues. Every Essential oil has its own Target Organ, e.g. Juniper oil targets the urinary tract and kidneys in particular, with secondary effects on the Digestive, Respiratory and Reproductive Systems. Chamomile Oil targets the Nervous System via which it can then exert a broad effect on many other body Systems, like the Digestive Tract for example.

Even when Essential oils are inhaled only, say in the form of a steam inhalation for a cold or as a fumigator for a background “psychological” effect, the oils will be absorbed across the mucous membranes of the Respiratory Tract and lungs into the blood stream, where once again, they can travel around the body very rapidly.

If Essential Oils are taken orally, their absorption through the Mucosa of the stomach and into the blood is very rapid. Very few essential oils are actually ‘digested’, which is fortunate as their Therapeutic principles may well be altered if this were the case.

The reason why Essential Oils behave in this manner in the body is because the molecules of which they are composed are organic molecules and very small indeed. Below are some of the more common Therapeutic Properties which can be obtained by using Essential Oils.

SOME THERAPEUTIC PROPERTIES OF ESSENTIAL OILS

          1. ANTISEPTIC

All essential oils are to a greater or lesser extent ANTISEPTIC. This is one of their most important and valuable properties. This broad description of ANTISEPSIS includes anti viral, antifungal, anti-bacterial and general anti-microbial activity which is found in such oils as: Lemon, Thyme, Tea Tree, Garlic, Eucalyptus, Cinnamon, Pine, Lavender and Sandalwood.

          2. ANTI-INFLAMMATORY

Oils with this property help to ease inflammation. The symptoms of inflammation are typified by pain, redness, swelling, and partial or total loss of function of the tissue involved. Examples of oils with this property are Chamomile, Rose, Lavender, Sandalwood, Myrrh and Benzoin.

          3. CYTOPHYLACTIC

Restoration of tissue function and regeneration of cells is another outstanding property of essential oils. Oils such as Pine, Basil and Rosemary are known to restore function to the adrenal glands, Jasmine, Cypress, and Ylang Ylang restore function of reproductive endocrine glands, lavender and chamomile stimulate cell regeneration in the skin.

          4. SEDATIVE

Essential oils may also have a pronounced effect on the nervous system by producing relaxation, pain relief and relieving muscle spasm. Oils with these properties include Lavender, Neroli, Rose, Geranium and Ylang Ylang.

However, the most outstanding property possessed by essential oils is their antiseptic/antigenetic properly.

This is well documented in Dr Jean Valnet’s book, “The Practice of Aromatherapy” and he discusses at length the effects of specific oils in relation to the control of extremely virulent microbes like Meningitis bacteria, Golden Staphylococcus bacteria and typhoid bacteria.

In your Reading for Week One, in the Chapter entitled “The Healing Power of Plants”, from Valnet’s book, there are extensive references to the many ways in which essential oils can affect the physical body.

It is critical to your full understanding and appreciation of Essential Oil Therapy that you appreciate the ways in which essential oils can have both a healing and preventive role in diseases involving invasion of the body by microbes.

Skin Care: It’s a cover up

For many years now we have seen a move away from skin care products that contain chemicals which are potentially harmful to the skin. Consumers have begun to demand natural skin care products. That is, they demand products, that instead of containing potentially harmful, synthetic and/or artificial ingredients contain natural ones. This is a step in the right direction, but it is not the whole story.

Ever Wondered What the Big Deal is About Natural Skincare?

Natural ingredients usually break down more easily and do not cause any stress on rives or the environment as a whole. This is unlike some of the other types of products that contain ingredients such as formaldehyde, DEA, EDTA, Diazolidinyl Urea, and other nasty chemicals, which can build up in the environment and cause pollution in our rivers and the surrounding ecosystems. Not to mention the real possibility of these chemicals entering into the food chain and ultimately on our dinner plate.
